Loss of External Storage Device Containing Business Information
We regret to announce an external storage device containing business information related to our cruise operations cannot presently be located.
The device may have contained personal information relating to guests and crew members. We are currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the facts and to assess any potential impact.
We sincerely apologize to our guests and all other affected parties for the concern and inconvenience this matter may cause.
We have reported this case to the Personal Information Protection Commission in Japan and have notified the relevant law enforcement authorities. At this time, there is no evidence that any personal information has been accessed by any unauthorized parties, disclosed, or misused.
1. Background and Overview
In connection with the retirement of the cruise ship Nippon Maru from service in May 2026, information stored on computers aboard the ship was transferred to external storage media for migration to computer systems aboard the cruise ship MITSUI OCEAN SAKURA.
During a check of a crew-restricted area aboard MITSUI OCEAN SAKURA, an IT staff member was unable to locate certain external storage media used in connection with the migration. A subsequent search of the ship was conducted; however, the missing media have not been recovered.
2. Categories of Personal Information Potentially Stored on the External Storage Media
We are currently reviewing approximately 200,000 backup files stored on our corporate servers to determine the specific information that may have been contained on the missing storage media. As this review is ongoing and we have not been able to determine the precise contents of the missing media, the following categories of personal information may potentially have been affected.
Potential categories of personal information:
Name / Date of birth / Gender / Address / Telephone number / Email address / Passport number / Bank account information (crew members only) / Medical and allergy information / Crew performance evaluation records (crew members only) / Vaccination records (crew members only) / Payroll-related information (crew members only) / Other similar personal information
3. Future Actions
We will continue our efforts to locate the missing storage media and to determine, with the assistance of external specialists where appropriate, the information that may have been stored on the missing media. If our investigation identifies any circumstances that warrants public disclosure, we will provide further updates promptly. We are also reviewing our data handling and storage measures as necessary to prevent the recurrence of similar cases.
